Dextran is composed of linear α-1,6-glucan chains with some α-1,3-branch points, resulting in a neutral, highly water-soluble polymer. Depending on its molecular weight, Dextran can function as a plasma expander, a cryoprotectant, or a viscosity modifier in therapeutic products.
