Pullulan is produced via microbial fermentation of starch by Aureobasidium pullulans and consists primarily of α-1,6-linked Maltotriose units. Its unique linear structure allows it to form clear, flexible films that dissolve quickly in the oral cavity making it a highly desirable excipient for fast-dissolving oral delivery systems.

In pharmaceutical applications, Pullulan is used as:

• A film-forming agent in oral dissolvable films and buccal strips for rapid delivery of APIs without the need for water
