Description
Poly(tetrahydrofuran)
Poly(tetrahydrofuran), also known as Polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMEG), is a versatile, linear polyether diol used in pharmaceutical, biomedical, and advanced materials applications. Known for its flexibility, hydrolysis resistance, and biocompatibility, it serves as a key intermediate in the production of elastomeric drug delivery systems and medical-grade thermoplastic polyurethanes. Poly(tetrahydrofuran)
- Is a linear polyether diol with excellent elasticity and mechanical stability
- Is used in medical polymers, bioresorbable devices, and controlled-release matrices
- Forms soft, biocompatible elastomers for implantable and topical systems
- Is compatible with polyurethanes, polyesters, and copolymer formulations
- Is manufactured under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certified conditions
- Is supplied with complete regulatory documentation including Certificate of Analysis (CoA) and technical data
Poly(tetrahydrofuran) is synthesized through acid-catalyzed polymerization of tetrahydrofuran (THF), resulting in a Telechelic diol structure. The terminal hydroxyl groups allow for easy cross-linking or chain extension with isocyanates and other reactants, enabling the formation of flexible hydrogels and soft elastomeric networks.
In pharmaceutical and medical applications, Poly(tetrahydrofuran) is used in:
- Biocompatible elastomer formulations for implantable or wearable drug delivery systems
- Soft medical device coatings, wound dressings, and bioadhesive platforms
- Controlled-release carriers for hydrophobic drugs or injectable depots
- Tissue-contact components in catheters, tubing, and surgical tools
- Polymer matrices for ophthalmic and transdermal formulations
Its excellent flexibility, water resistance, and low glass transition temperature (Tg) make it particularly suitable for systems that require mechanical durability and prolonged residence in the body.
CarboMer supplies Poly(tetrahydrofuran) in a range of molecular weights (typically 250–4000 g/mol), with controlled hydroxyl functionality and minimal residual monomers. Custom molecular weight grades and copolymer formulations are available upon request.
The material is packaged in sealed, low-moisture, tamper-evident containers. Available in liquid or semi-solid forms depending on molecular weight. Minimum order quantities (MOQ), lead times, and documentation—including CoA and SDS—are provided upon request.
Each batch is tested for identity (NMR, FTIR), hydroxyl number, acid value, moisture content, viscosity, and microbial purity. All shipments include Certificates of Analysis (CoA), Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and full traceability documentation.
As with all CarboMer functional polymers, Poly(tetrahydrofuran) is supported by regulatory expertise, formulation development assistance, and global supply chain capabilities to enable your success in advanced drug delivery and medical applications.
