Description

Ficoll

Ficoll is a high-purity, synthetic, branched Polysucrose polymer widely used in pharmaceutical, clinical, and research applications as a density gradient medium, viscosity modifier, and biocompatible stabilizer. Its nonionic, hydrophilic properties make it ideal for separating cells and subcellular components by density, as well as for enhancing the physical properties of biological formulations. Ficoll is

  • A branched high-molecular-weight Polysucrose polymer (typically MW ~400,000)
  • Used as a density gradient medium for cell separation and blood fractionation
  • Nonionic, inert, and biocompatible—ideal for pharmaceutical and diagnostic systems
  • Suitable for parenteral formulations, biologic stabilization, and cell culture applications
  • Is manufactured under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) conditions
  • Supplied with complete regulatory documentation including Certificate of Analysis (CoA) and supporting technical data

Ficoll is synthesized by copolymerizing sucrose with epichlorohydrin under alkaline conditions, resulting in a highly soluble polymer with low toxicity and minimal biological interaction. It forms stable, isoosmotic gradients that preserve cell integrity during centrifugation.

In pharmaceutical and biomedical applications, Ficoll is used in:

  • Density gradient centrifugation to isolate lymphocytes, granulocytes, and other cell populations
  • Biologic formulations as a stabilizer for proteins, enzymes, and nucleic acids
  • Parenteral delivery systems for sustained release and viscosity control
  • Cell culture and cryopreservation media to support osmotic balance and viability
  • Diagnostics and separation technologies in immunology and molecular biology workflows

Because Ficoll is inert, non-immunogenic, and chemically stable across a wide pH range, it is preferred in sensitive formulations and clinical protocols. When used with radiopaque or ionic agents (e.g., Sodium Diatrizoate), it creates highly effective separation systems such as Ficoll-Paqueâ„¢.

CarboMer supplies Ficoll with consistent molecular weight profile and tight control over residual monomers and heavy metals. The material is available in both pharmaceutical-grade and research-grade formats depending on your application needs.

The material is packaged in sealed, tamper-evident, moisture-resistant containers. Available in standard and bulk quantities for R&D, clinical, and commercial manufacturing. Minimum order quantities (MOQ), lead times, and documentation—including CoA and SDS—are available upon request.

Each batch is tested for molecular weight distribution (SEC or light scattering), appearance, solubility, viscosity, pH and microbial limits. Certificates of Analysis (CoA), Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and traceability documentation accompany every shipment.

As with all CarboMer biopolymers and specialty excipients, Ficoll is supported by technical expertise, regulatory insight, and secure global supply to help you advance innovative therapies, diagnostics, and separation technologies.
