Description

Chitosan

Chitosan is a high-purity cationic polysaccharide derived from partial deacetylation of chitin and used in pharmaceutical, biomedical, and research applications for its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and functional versatility. Its primary amine groups provide positive charge under acidic conditions, enabling strong interaction with negatively charged molecules and biological surfaces.
Chitosan appears as a white to off-white powder that is insoluble in water but readily soluble in dilute acidic solutions, forming clear to slightly opalescent solutions. Its physicochemical properties vary depending on molecular weight and degree of deacetylation, allowing tailoring for specific formulation and delivery requirements.
In pharmaceutical and research applications, Chitosan is used in:
• Mucoadhesive drug delivery systems
• Oral, nasal, ocular, and transdermal formulations
• Controlled-release and nanoparticle-based delivery platforms
• Wound care, hemostatic, and tissue engineering research
• Gene delivery and nucleic acid complexation studies
• Stabilization and encapsulation of bioactive compounds
Chitosan functions by providing electrostatic interaction, film-forming capability, and bioadhesion while maintaining a favorable safety and biodegradation profile. Its ability to transiently open tight junctions has also been explored in research involving enhanced drug absorption.
CarboMer supplies Chitosan with defined molecular weight ranges, controlled degree of deacetylation, and consistent physicochemical properties suitable for regulated pharmaceutical research and advanced biomedical applications.
The material is packaged in sealed, moisture-resistant, tamper-evident containers to preserve stability and handling performance. Available in laboratory and pilot-scale quantities. Documentation includes Certificate of Analysis (CoA), Safety Data Sheet (SDS), and full traceability.
Each batch is tested for identity, degree of deacetylation, molecular weight distribution, viscosity, moisture content, and microbial limits. Technical support is available to assist with formulation design, solubilization strategies, and application development.
As with all CarboMer supplied biopolymer materials, Chitosan is supported by dependable global supply, rigorous quality systems, and expert technical guidance to ensure consistent and reliable performance across pharmaceutical and research applications.
